In Puerto Rico, Christmas doesn't start with the tree: it starts with the first glass of coquito. Creamy, coconutty and warm with cinnamon and rum, it's the drink poured at every parranda and the homemade gift everyone hopes to receive. Every family guards its own version, but nearly all of them start from the same base.

This guide walks you through an authentic Puerto Rican coquito recipe, how to bottle it so it keeps well, and how to dress it up as a gift—whether you're on the island or making it in the States.

Puerto Rican coquito ingredients

This recipe makes about 60 ounces (1.8 liters): enough to fill a one-liter bottle and pour a few glasses the same day.

  • 1 can coconut milk (13.5 oz)
  • 1 can cream of coconut (15 oz)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
  • 1 can evaporated milk (12 oz)
  • 1 to 1½ cups white rum, to taste (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more to serve
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks to garnish

How to make coquito, step by step

  1. Shake the cans before opening. Cream of coconut separates easily and needs to be fully mixed.
  2. Blend the milks and coconut. Pour the coconut milk, cream of coconut, condensed milk and evaporated milk into a blender. Blend for one to two minutes until smooth.
  3. Add the spices. Add cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg and blend a few more seconds.
  4. Add the rum gradually. Start with half, taste and adjust. It's easier to go up than down.
  5. Bottle and chill. Funnel the coquito into clean bottles and refrigerate for at least four hours. It tastes better—and thicker—cold.
  6. Serve. Shake the bottle first, since the coconut fat rises. Pour into small glasses and dust with cinnamon.

Coquito variations

Alcohol-free coquito

Leave out the rum and add a little more evaporated milk or coconut milk to keep the texture. It's the version for kids and anyone who doesn't drink.

Coquito with egg yolks

Some families, especially in the countryside, make coquito with egg yolks, closer to an eggnog. If you go that route, cook the yolks with part of the milk over low heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened and before it boils. The yolks get cooked and the texture turns silky.

Flavored coquito

You can build on the classic base with chocolate, pistachio, coffee, pumpkin or guava. Add flavors in small amounts so coconut and cinnamon still lead.

How to bottle coquito so it keeps

Coquito goes in glass bottles, and not just out of tradition: glass doesn't hold odors and cleans easily. Swing-top bottles—the ones with the wire clasp and rubber seal—are the most practical, since they open and close without tools.

  • Wash the bottles in hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly and let them dry upside down. Do the same with the stopper and seal.
  • Fill with a funnel and leave about two fingers of headspace so you can shake it before serving.
  • Always refrigerate. Coquito contains dairy and belongs in the fridge in a closed bottle. Follow your recipe's guidance on how long to keep it.
  • A one-liter bottle is the ideal gift size: plenty of glasses, and it fits in the fridge door.

Our 33.8 oz (1 liter) coquito bottles have swing-top stoppers and come in five colors: clear, red, green, light blue and dark blue. Clear shows off the coquito; the colored ones look beautiful on a holiday table. They're glass, so wrap them for transport.

How to gift coquito

A bottle of coquito is one of the most Puerto Rican gifts there is. Presented well, it needs nothing else:

  • Tie a cinnamon stick or a pine sprig around the neck with jute twine or a red ribbon.
  • Add a handwritten tag with who made it and the date.
  • Note on the tag whether it contains alcohol and that it must be refrigerated.
  • For a fuller gift, pair it with a bag of Christmas cookies.

If your family lives in the States, the practical move is to make it there: coquito needs to stay cold and doesn't travel well by mail. What does travel are the empty bottles, the sweets and the recipe. Our guide to gifts from Puerto Rico has more ideas.

What to serve with coquito

At a Puerto Rican parranda, coquito rarely arrives alone. It comes with cookies and simple sweets that don't compete with it:

Coquito FAQ

What is Puerto Rican coquito made of?

Coconut milk, cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, white rum, cinnamon and vanilla. Some recipes add nutmeg or egg yolks.

What rum is best for coquito?

Puerto Rican white rum is the most common choice. Some people add a splash of dark or spiced rum for more depth.

Can you make coquito without alcohol?

Yes. Skip the rum and add a little more milk. It's just as festive.

How long does coquito last in the fridge?

It depends on the ingredients, especially whether it has eggs. Always keep it refrigerated in a closed bottle and follow your recipe's guidance.

Why does coquito thicken or separate?

Coconut fat solidifies in the cold and rises to the top. It's normal: shake the bottle well or let it sit out for a few minutes before serving.
